The Ministry of Health has confirmed one more death related to COVID-19 bringing the total number of deaths now to three since the beginning of the community outbreak in Vanuatu.
The new death is a 60-year-old man, who was admitted to the Vila Central Hospital on the 2April 2022. He was reported to have had underlying health conditions and later tested positive with COVID-19.
The Ministry of Health continues to extend its sympathies to the families and friends of the individual concerned.
In addition, the Ministry of Health reported this week one case identified in Tafea Province on 3 April 2022 considered a border case. The case was identified among crew members on a cargo ship. No crew disembarked the ship.
The Tafea Health team that conducted the test are now in pre-cautionary quarantine and will be tested at the appropriate time points. A vessel with the positive patient has now returned to Port Vila.
According to the Vanuatu Situation Report dated 3 to 4 April, 87 new confirmed cases have been reported in the past 24 hours, 11 cases were admitted to the Vila Central Hospital with four in critical condition. The number of tests conducted has decreased over the reporting period explaining the decrease of cases over the same period.
There are currently 4,527 active cases reported since 1 January 2022 as 2,325 have recovered so far from the virus.
The provincial breakdown of the new cases are as follows
- 23 confirmed cases reported in Shefa Province in the past 24 hours between 3 to 4 April and a total of 3,758 cases reported since 1 January 2022.
- 64 new confirmed cases reported in the past 24hours with a total of 769 cases reported since 1 January 2022 in Sanma Province.
The cases captured through surveillance do not represent all cases in the community; there are many more cases that have not been detected as they are asymptomatic or the person has not been tested.
